Trump's unexpected backing of TikTok amid talks of a potential ban raises eyebrows.
Donald Trump, the former President, made an entirely unforeseen appeal for TikTok, a platform he once endorsed to be suspended. An about-turn is being witnessed where Congress is considering a particular law, that might actually see a TikTok ban implemented in the US. Trump’s temperament change is shocking enough to stir up rumors and curiosity.
The pending legislation, which is bipartisan supported, will ask ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company to divest the app’s shares or face the removal of the app from the U.S app stores and web hosting companies.
Proponents claim that the ban is an essential step to ensure national security and raising the question of cybersecurity as guided by the TikTok application.
The opponents such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) have raised big concerns about the bill’s leadership style which they considered to be authoritarian and its impact on the American businesses and citizens that had some stakes in TikTok.
Sen. Paul is one of the senators who have spoken out against the proposed ban and he insists that taking such an action is something that’s closely associated with China. He also notes the possible damages the ban has to the Americans, through the seizure of the business and individual TikTok interests with no proof of crime first committed.
TikTok’s popularity among young voters becomes political battleground Trump’s decision to advocate for TikTok has been perceived by some as an effort with a strategic objective to connect with youth voters who are the most active users of that application.
The former President’s acknowledgment of that fact pinpoints the significance of TikTok on modern politics and the possibility of youth being swayed by this widespread social media platform.
Lawmakers will take the House to the floor later this week to carry on the battle between the party lines. Also, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Select Committee on Chinese Communist Parties, noted that the bill would pass and explained bipartisan support for the measure. The outcome of the vote remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: The future of TikTok stays in the hands of the United States.
