Presently, Students on College campuses are diagnosed with increasing frequency with Loneliness and various types of isolation. Similarly, the population faces similar concerns regarding mental health which are being discussed by the United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. Known for his advocacy for mental wellbeing, Dr. Murthy, in a recent speech discussed this issue and consequently touched an emotional nerve within his audience.
Another keynote speaker, along with the esteemed personalities were Dr. Murthy and University of Miami President Julio Frenk at the event on Feb. 22. The first speaker to address the audience was Emily Goldstein, an UM senior. She was the first who underlined the key role of the open discussion about the mental health of Students.
The speech by Dr. Murthy illustrated how Social Networks exacerbated mental health problems which were even further enhanced by the pandemic. Social disconnection is highly lethal. It has been already demonstrated that every one of two adults suffers from mild to severe Loneliness, and the impact of social disconnection on health is far more significant than smoking and obesity.
Highlighting both private and work related experiences, Dr. Murthy indeed underscored the indescribable depth of relationships. He recalled lessons from people at the end of their life span, where the absolute matter was establishing the hook-up rather than the material or superficial pursuits.
Before the pandemic, Doctor Murthy had highlighted in an interview a growing issue where individuals do not know how to handle personal interactions. He presented some tips which included setting up boundaries for use of tech, and the ways to supporting others through them.
Being isolated from others for months can make us easily get accustomed to living in the virtual world. Hence, it is crucially important to develop our “Social muscle” and Spiritual Intent by spending more time with people in a relaxing, real life situations and reading about Bible verses about Loneliness. Though he cautioned that Tech disturbs Sleep and face to face Communication and Learning, and thus becomes disastrous for our lives, at last he asked for better control in Social Media.
The influential message from the Surgeon General resounded and ideas spread among the young Student crowd. In fact, according to one study at Arizona State University, 80% of participants have shown a level of Loneliness that was measurable.
Through bringing forward of the 5-5 connection challenge, he induced people to act by taking five actions for the five consecutive days aiming to build up relationships with others. The event ended with the memorable gesture of illuminating the auditorium with the phone flashlights of the participants undeniably signifying how people in the digital world relate to each other and communicate.
In conclusion, Doctor Murthy’s points put in one’s head the fact that cultivating and developing connections is the main power of the Society to move forward. When we find ourselves feeling alone in those hard moments and times, we have those Bible verses about Loneliness to offer us comfort and reassurance that we are never alone in that fight.
