Chad Daybell in court during his trial where he was found guilty of murder, conspiracy, and insurance fraud.
Chad Daybell has been found guilty on multiple counts, including the murders of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and two of his stepchildren, Tylee Ryan and Joshua “JJ” Vallow.
The jury in Boise, Idaho, reached the verdict after a two-month trial that captivated the nation with its shocking details and bizarre religious overtones.
In August 2019, Chad Daybell texted Lori Vallow, saying, “There is a plan being orchestrated for the children”. A month later, Lori Vallow’s children disappeared. Authorities later found their bodies buried on Daybell’s property in Rexburg, Idaho.
The chilling messages and subsequent discovery of the children’s bodies were pivotal in the prosecution’s case against Daybell.
Authorities convicted Daybell of first-degree murder in Tammy Daybell’s death, initially deemed a natural cause in October 2019.
Suspicious circumstances prompted authorities to exhume Tammy’s body and reclassify her cause of death as homicide by asphyxiation.
Authorities also found Daybell guilty of conspiracy charges in the deaths of Tylee and JJ, last seen alive in September 2019.
The prosecution argued that Daybell and Lori Vallow shared extreme religious beliefs, viewing people as zombies overtaken by dark spirits. Consequently, these beliefs allegedly justified their horrific actions.
Prosecutor Lindsey Blake detailed how Daybell manipulated the coroner’s initial ruling on Tammy’s death. Additionally, he used a numerical system to rate family members based on their perceived spiritual status.
In addition to the murder charges, Daybell faced two counts of insurance fraud. He had maximized Tammy’s life insurance policy just before her death, making himself the beneficiary.
Less than a month after Tammy’s death, Daybell married Lori Vallow in Hawaii, further raising suspicions about his motives.
The jury deliberated for less than six hours before finding Chad Daybell guilty on all counts, including grand theft and insurance fraud.
The prosecution is seeking the death penalty, and the jury will now decide his sentence. Authorities have already sentenced Lori Vallow to multiple life terms for her role in the deaths.
Melanie Gibb, a close friend of Lori Vallow, testified that the couple believed they would lead 144,000 people in the end times, as described in the Book of Revelation.
They also believed that some individuals, including Tammy Daybell and Lori’s children, were possessed by evil spirits. They used these delusions to justify their gruesome acts.
Chad Daybell’s conviction brings a sense of justice to the families of Tammy Daybell, Tylee Ryan, and JJ Vallow. This case, marked by bizarre religious beliefs and heinous acts, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of extreme ideology.
As the legal system continues to hold the perpetrators accountable, the hope is for healing and closure for the affected families.
