Lautaro Martinez scores the decisive goal in the thrilling Chile vs Argentina match at MetLife Stadium.
In a thrilling encounter, Argentina secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa America with a late victory against Chile. Lautaro Martinez’s 88th-minute goal in the Chile vs Argentina clash ensured the defending champions emerged victorious at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The match saw Argentina dominate with 22 shots, yet they faced stiff resistance from Chile.
From the onset, Argentina displayed their intent. Julian Alvarez of Manchester City and Fiorentina’s Nicolas Gonzalez were early threats to Chile’s goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
Despite creating numerous opportunities, Argentina’s talisman, Lionel Messi, was denied by the post in the first half.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister missing a crucial chance.
Chile vs Argentina took an interesting turn when Chile registered their first attempt at goal in the 72nd minute. Rodrigo Echeverria forced a save from Emiliano Martinez, sparking a brief resurgence for Chile.
Echeverria and Marcelino Nunez continued to test the Argentine goalkeeper as Chile sought to break their 30-game winless streak against Argentina in Copa America.
As the game seemed destined for a draw, Lautaro Martinez stepped up. The Inter Milan striker, who had scored in Argentina’s previous win against Canada, capitalized on a loose ball following Messi’s corner.
His quick reaction in the crowded penalty area delivered the winning goal, breaking the deadlock and securing Argentina’s place at the top of Group A.
While Argentina celebrated their victory, concerns lingered over Lionel Messi’s fitness. The Argentina captain experienced discomfort in his right hamstring from the start of the match, exacerbated by a heavy challenge from Chile’s Gabriel Suazo.
Despite completing the full 90 minutes, Messi admitted post-match that his hamstring was tight and not as loose as it should have been. He mentioned that he would “see how it goes” regarding his condition.
With their victory against Chile, Argentina guaranteed a top-two finish in Group A. They are set to face Peru in their final group match.
Lautaro Martinez, reflecting on the match, noted the complexity of their games and emphasized the need to maintain their current approach.
The Chile vs Argentina clash highlighted the resilience and determination of both teams. While Argentina dominated for most of the match, Chile’s late efforts made for an exciting finish. Lautaro Martinez’s late goal ensured Argentina’s progress in the Copa America, but Lionel Messi’s hamstring issue remains a concern for the team as they move forward in the tournament.
