It was announced with sadness that Dexter King, the youngest son of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, passed away on Saturday at 62 years of age in his sleep peacefully. His devoted wife, Leah Weber King, shared that he lost his battle to prostate cancer. This is a devastating blow to the King family and civil rights movement legacy.
The emphasizing the need for strength of losing another brother in arms, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO remarked on behalf of her loss that it was a tough time as they have lost an important member and crucial sibling to them. In the words of Martin Luther King III, the announcement requests for prayers and comfort to the bereaved family.
Dexter King was born on January 30, 1961, in Atlanta and had a legacy of activism and service passed down to him. It was named after Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, that his father served, and he suffered grief at a young age when his father was assassinated in 1968. In spite of the difficulties, he continued his father’s path to Morehouse College and became one link in a chain sustaining that legacy.
Realizing the eerie similarity between himself and his father, Dexter dabbled in creative arts when he portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. on a 2002 television show titled “The Rosa Parks Story”. Initially attracted to acting as a career pathway; however, family duty was the calling that was beckoning him. It was this dedication to the task that saw him serve as The King Center’s Chairman and President of King Estate till the time of his death.
In 2013, Dexter married his best friend and partner of twenty years; Leah Weber. Their marriage reflected the love and understanding that defined Dexter’s parents’ relationship. As a previous broadcast journalist from New Orleans, Leah formed an essential part of Dexter’s life and gave him unending love during the 14 years they were married.
Dexter embarked on his journey; the personal pain transformed into activism as portrayed in the 2003 memoir “Growing Up King”. His commitment to advancing the dream of parents for their children was awarded by Rev. Al Sharpton among many others who acknowledged that he left life too early.
In a heartwarming scene in 1997, Dexter met with James Earl Ray, the imprisoned murderer of his father. Ray insisted on his innocence and, however painful it was to him personally, Dexter testified for the innocent Ray as an expression of true justice.
While the King family seeks privacy while going through this ordeal, people reflect upon Dexter Scott King’s contribution to civil rights heritage and his commitment to familial values. His legacy continues as he leaves a lasting mark on humanity even long after death.
The announcement of his death reaffirms the contribution to promoting equality and justice by King’s family even after their deaths. In the days ahead, arrangements for a memorial service will be announced which in turn shall provide an opportunity to pay tribute and homage to such an extraordinary man whose name will live on over generations.
