In a touching twist, Nintendo has now officially declared the end of Online Services. This will apply for their old 3DS and Wii games consoles. Come April 8, 2024, the co-operative play over online will terminate. This will be in addition to their data discarding from the internet and rankings.

This major change includes saying goodbye to popular Wii games titles. This will include Mario Kart 7, the original version of Mario 8 on Wii U, Splatoon, etc. The only exceptions are Pokémon Bank and Pokémon Transporter apps that will operate after the shutdown date. However, a note could be later issued about the possibility for their subsequent termination.

The Countdown Begins for Nintendo Wii Games

Owners of Nintendo Wii U and 3DS systems have only a couple of months left to enjoy the online service. The cut is scheduled for 4 PM PDT on April 8, 2024. This leaves a small window for people to chat online, play together, and check rankings within these websites.

Console Variants Affected

The statement clarifies that this change concerns a number of Console versions. These Console versions include the New Nintendo 3DS series, Nintendo 3DS series, and Wii U models (Deluxe and Basic). This will essentially be the end of an era for approximately 75 million Nintendo 3DS owners and some 13 million consoles of Wii U.

Transfer of Shop Balance from Nintendo Wii Games

On March 11, at 10 PM PT, link any remaining shop balance with your account, as Nintendo reminds users to facilitate the transfer. This secured balance may then enable users to purchase games on a Nintendo Switch.

Offline Enjoyment Persists

Although the withdrawal from online services is a serious alteration, users can still engage in offline activities. Offline activities can be continued on their Nintendo Wii and 3DS consoles. Unfortunately, participating in online aspects such as Pokémon battles with friends and obtaining new titles will become a thing of the past.

Nintendo’s Forward Momentum

This move is a reaction to the closure of Nintendo eShop on Wii U and 3DS in March last year. It reveals Nintendo’s planned strategy for future development and especially current successful Switch Successor. It’s like a reflection of the trend in gaming, where Microsoft will be closing its online store for Xbox 360 later this year.
