The Story Behind the Slurpee

The Slurpee has a unique origin story. Specifically, in the late 1950s, Omar Knedlik’s soda fountain broke down, leading him to stash soda in the freezer. This accidental discovery inspired him to create a frozen beverage machine using parts from an automobile’s air conditioner.

Eventually, by 1966, 7-Eleven stores started selling these semi-frozen sodas and named them “Slurpee.” Since then, Slurpees have become a global sensation, with over 27 flavors available by the 1970s.
