Contrary to a Ground Beef Recall option, authorities have issued a public health alert for ground beef products that may be tainted with E. Coli.
The contaminated products in question are under the number “EST. 960A” within the USDA mark of inspection. These products were distributed across the country to various Food Service Institutions and Retail establishments.
Although a Recall was not requested due to the products being unavailable for purchase, the alert was issued to inform Consumers not to consume them.
The issue came to the notice of the Greater Omaha Packing Co. in Nebraska during an inventory check of a product on hold due to E. Coli contamination. The company notified the FSIS that they inadvertently used some of the contaminated beef to produce products, which were then shipped.
As of now, there have been no confirmed cases of illness linked to the consumption of these products. It’s important to note that E. coli can result in symptoms like dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, with severe cases potentially leading to kidney failure, particularly in children and older adults.
Consumers are advised not to consume the products and to safely dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase. Cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit is crucial to kill harmful bacteria.
The FSIS has cautioned against consuming Greater Omaha Packing Co.’s Ground beef products produced on March 28, 2024, with a “Use/Freeze by” date of April 22, 2024, and packaging date of “032824.” The agency emphasizes the importance of taking precautions to prevent foodborne illness.
