Kiawentiio embodies Katara's spirit in Netflix's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender,' showcasing her talent and indigenous heritage.
A call from her team revealed that she had landed the role of Katara in Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: ‘The Last Airbender’. This was a very big news for Kiawentiio and her parents.
Kiawentiio has gone on a press circuit, anxiously waiting to find out when she will be able to reveal her filming experiences in the past two years. The idea of being a part of such beloved franchise didn’t sink in to her till she went to Brazil with the cast for the Netflix Promo Tudum Global Fan Event, where she got the chance to experience the frenzy of fans in person.
In the world of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender,’ ancient elements like water, earth, air, and fire divide societies. The main idea of the story is about Aang, the Avatar, overcoming the challenge by mastering the four elements, thus restoring balance to the world. The character of Katara played by Kiawentiio was very demanding as she had to fully understand who the Katara was becoming a part of her at the same time so that she could set her own Katara imprint.
In order to take this character, Kiawentiio and the ensemble of youth went through strenuous training sessions at “Bender Boot Camp”. It was there that they learned about bending in different forms and martial arts poses. The experience was difficult for her, yet it was quite rewarding as it resembled Katara who went through the process of training how to control her waterbending powers.
Diversified casting has given Netflix a distinctive feature throughout the series in which Kiawentiio portrays the true Indigenous voices. Showing the pride of her indigenous culture and stories, she dramatizes them across the Avatar world, that gives a realistic representation.
With the show’s debut only weeks away, Kiawentiio hopes that the audience will also have the same amount of fun watching the series as she had filming it. She awaits to witness further development of Katara and demands for more of her.
