After enduring over three years in a Russian prison, American schoolteacher Marc Fogel is finally back on U.S. soil. The 63-year-old history teacher had been serving a 14-year sentence for drug smuggling, a conviction that U.S. officials now describe as a significant diplomatic breakthrough. Fogel’s troubles began in August 2021 when he was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after customs officials discovered 17 grams of medically prescribed marijuana in his luggage.

While this medication was legal in Pennsylvania, where he resided, Russian authorities charged him with drug smuggling, leading to a harsh 14-year sentence in a penal colony.

His case sparked widespread attention, with many advocates arguing that the punishment was disproportionately severe, particularly given his long-standing career as an educator at international schools, including the Anglo-American School of Moscow.

U.S. Efforts and Release of Marc Fogel

His release was achieved through high-level negotiations spearheaded by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Before being freed, Fogel was moved from a Russian prison to a pre-trial detention center in Moscow, suggesting that discussions for his release had been ongoing for some time.

National Security Advisor Mike Waltz emphasized that this deal represents a positive development in U.S.-Russia relations and is seen as progress toward ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Upon his arrival in Washington, Fogel received a warm welcome from President Donald Trump, who described the release as a “very fair” deal and expressed gratitude toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Fogel expressed immense gratitude for his freedom, stating, “I feel like the luckiest man on earth.”

” His release came after the U.S. government declared him “wrongfully detained” in December 2024, which intensified efforts to secure his freedom.
