The disease called Polio was a long-term struggle for Paul but a new problem came in March, as he was hospitalized with COVID-19. In the end, Paul didn’t manage to get used to eating and drinking again after his discharge. Brother, Philip Alexander, thanked the people, who donated to help Paul, so he spent his last year living in comfort.
Polio and Paul‘s struggle to live a normal life shows the necessity of vaccination and the damage that diseases like Polio can do.
Before the vaccine was created, the Polio epidemic was wreaking havoc in the lives of children. The vaccine, developed by Jonas Salk, emerged as the most significant step in the process of Polio eradication from the USA.
For the last few years, Paul seemingly became the most popular on TikTok, where he was posting stories about his life, talking about things he experienced being locked into the Iron lung. His account, “Polio Paul“, which racked up over 300,000 followers eventually, kept his message of hope and bravery in front of the youth.
Paul greatly supported disability rights all throughout his life. He held the view that any person with physical deficiencies ought to enjoy a normal life. His legacy is a reminder of the need to be inclusive and accessible to generation now and also those to come.
In 2023 Paul was honored by the Guinness Records as the longest living person inside an iron lung, denoting his strength and robustness.
