Senator JD Vance joins Donald Trump as his vice presidential pick, stirring excitement and controversy at the Republican National Convention.
The Tenacious D tour has come to an abrupt halt following a controversial comment made by band member Kyle Gass during a concert in Sydney. The comment, which referenced the recent assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, has sparked significant backlash.
Jack Black, the other half of the comedy rock duo, announced the decision to cancel the remaining tour dates after Gass’s comment led to an outcry.
On stage, Black presented Gass with a birthday cake and asked him to make a wish. Gass responded, “Don’t miss Trump next time”. This off-the-cuff remark was met with immediate and widespread criticism.
Gass quickly issued an apology on Instagram, admitting his comment was inappropriate and dangerous.
He expressed deep regret, stating, “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment”. Despite his apology, the damage was done.
His agent, Michael Greene of Greene Talent, announced they had parted ways due to the incident.
The reaction to Gass’s comment was swift and severe. Australian Senator Ralph Babet called for the duo to be deported, labeling the remark as “disgusting and unacceptable”.
X owner Elon Musk also condemned the comment, calling it “evil”.
Additionally, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd expressed his disgust, stating that such jokes about violence are no laughing matter.
Following the backlash, Jack Black released a statement expressing his dismay and explaining his decision to cancel the tour.
He emphasized that he would never condone hate speech or political violence, adding, “I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold”.
Black took the opportunity to thank fans for their support and understanding during this difficult time.
He acknowledged that the decision would disappoint many but maintained that it was necessary given the circumstances.
The tour, which was set to continue with performances in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, New Zealand, and the US, has been indefinitely postponed.
Promoter Frontier Touring confirmed the cancellation of the upcoming show in Newcastle, New South Wales, on Instagram.
The incident has prompted broader discussions about the boundaries of humor and the responsibilities of public figures.
US President Joe Biden also weighed in, condemning political violence and calling for unity in the country. “There is no place in America for this kind of violence”, he said, emphasizing the need for national cohesion.
The Tenacious D tour’s abrupt cancellation serves as a stark reminder of the impact words can have and the importance of considering their potential consequences.
As Jack Black and Kyle Gass navigate the fallout from this controversy, the future of their musical endeavors remains uncertain.
The incident has sparked important conversations about the role of artists in shaping public discourse and the need for responsible, thoughtful communication, even in the realm of comedy and entertainment.
