The collapse of Teton Pass due to a landslide has caused major travel disruptions, impacting commuters and local businesses.
On Saturday, a large section of TETON PASS near Jackson, Wyoming, gave way, severing the winding road and causing significant travel disruptions.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has stated that the road at milepost 12.8 will remain closed while officials develop a repair plan.
Commuters now face an hour-long detour, causing frustration. Concerns arise about the roadway’s future reliability.
Nonetheless, Darin Westby, WYDOT Director, acknowledged the road’s significance. He emphasized its importance for commuters, tourism, and medical access.
Aerial photos and drone footage reveal a gaping chasm where the road once was, with a guardrail hanging precariously over the edge.
The collapse has not only disrupted daily life but also poses a significant challenge for local businesses and the regional economy.
Maintenance crews first responded to a large crack in the road on Friday.
Despite efforts to maintain the highway’s viability, the landslide continued to move, ultimately leading to the road’s collapse.
Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, and no equipment was damaged. Governor Mark Gordon commended WYDOT staff for their efforts to protect public safety and emphasized that geologists and engineers are assessing the situation to develop a long-term solution.
The TETON PASS is a critical link between small towns in eastern Idaho and the tourist hub of Jackson, Wyoming. Stephanie Harsha, a spokesperson for WYDOT’s District 3, mentioned that the alternate route between Jackson and Victor, Idaho, extends more than 60 miles, significantly lengthening commute times.
The closure of TETON PASS is not only a logistical challenge but also impacts the local economy.
Governor Gordon acknowledged the difficulties faced by Teton County residents, regional commuters, and businesses reliant on this route.
Governor Gordon assured residents that WYDOT is working on a long-term plan to rebuild the collapsed roadway. He reiterated the importance of this highway for both local commuters and recreationists traveling between Victor, Idaho, and Jackson, Wyoming, near Grand Teton National Park.
Lastly, The TETON PASS collapse serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the challenges of maintaining infrastructure in mountainous regions. As WYDOT continues its efforts to restore this vital roadway, the community remains hopeful for a swift and effective resolution.
