The Tejano music world is mourning the loss of a beloved figure, Johnny Canales, who passed away at the age of 77. Canales was a charismatic TV host and musician whose iconic catchphrase, “You got it, take it away,” became synonymous with the vibrant Tejano music scene.
A Beacon of Joy and Hope in the Tejano Realm
Johnny Canales was more than just a TV host; he was a beacon of joy and hope for countless people. His show, “El Show de Johnny Canales,” became a beloved staple in Latino households, initially broadcast across Texas and eventually reaching audiences in 23 other countries. Canales played a pivotal role in launching the careers of many Tejano artists, including the legendary Selena, as well as Bronco and Bobby Pulido.
From Mexico to the Tejano Spotlight
Born in Mexico, Canales and his family made their way to Robstown, Texas, near Corpus Christi. After serving in the Army in Germany during the 1960s, he returned home and embarked on a career as a disc jockey at a Spanish-language radio station. It was during this time that he also formed his own band, “Johnny Canales y su Orchestra.”
The Rise and Shine of “The Johnny Canales Show”
In 1983, Canales took on the role of host for “The Johnny Canales Show,” a half-hour variety program focused on the vibrant Tejano music scene. His friendly demeanor and the show’s captivating live performances quickly gained a loyal following. The show, primarily conducted in Spanish, expanded its reach, eventually being syndicated in various Texas markets and beyond.
Johnny Canales Reaching International Acclaim
The success of “The Johnny Canales Show” reached new heights when Univision picked it up in 1988, transforming it into an international sensation. Tejano music fans from around the world tuned in to watch performances by stars like Little Joe, La Mafia, and a young Selena Quintanilla. The show’s popularity continued on Telemundo in the late 1990s, further cementing Canales’ legacy as a trailblazer in the industry.
Persevering Through Challenges
Despite facing health challenges, including complications from a stroke in 2008, Canales remained dedicated to his passion for music. In 2010, he and his wife Nora launched “El Nuevo Show de Johnny y Nora Canales,” continuing to influence the Tejano music world. In recognition of his contributions, Canales was inducted into the Las Vegas Walk of Stars in 2016.
