Trump for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.” Rep. Greg Steube of Florida echoed this sentiment, showing his support for Donald by declaring, “@realDonaldTrump for Speaker.”

McCarthy’s Sudden Fall

The chaos that has gripped the Republican Party reached its climax when Speaker Kevin McCarthy was voted out of office. This extraordinary development was instigated by Matt Gaetz, a Florida congressman and staunch Trump supporter, who led the charge to oust McCarthy. Gaetz’s motion garnered support from 11 Republicans and all House Democrats, resulting in a close vote of 216-210 and an official declaration of the Speaker’s office as “hereby vacant.”

Notably, McCarthy’s ouster coincides with the delicate financial situation facing the U.S. government, adding another layer of complexity to the already tumultuous political landscape.

Trump’s Muted Response

What makes Trump‘s absence from the ongoing political chaos particularly striking is his prior defense of McCarthy. The former President, known for his influence within the GOP, could have potentially quelled the movement to remove McCarthy from his position. Yet, the former President chose to remain on the sidelines, offering only a brief post on his social media platform, Truth Social, lamenting the perennial infighting among Republicans.

The former President‘s silence has raised eyebrows, given his history of support for McCarthy and his significant sway within the Republican Party. However, sources close to Trump suggest that his decision to stay uninvolved was a calculated one.

Privately, Trump reportedly indicated that while he still personally liked McCarthy, the Speaker’s fate was ultimately “up to him.” Trump appeared to maintain a pragmatic stance, asserting that he had “friends on both sides” of the Gaetz-McCarthy conflict. This pragmatic approach suggested that Trump didn’t see any substantial benefits in intervening on McCarthy’s behalf, especially if the outcome remained uncertain.

McCarthy’s Trump-Aligned Stance

Kevin McCarthy has spent years cultivating a favorable image in Trump’s eyes. Despite publicly expressing his outrage over the former President’s role in the January 6 Capitol riot, McCarthy quickly aligned himself with the former President, even traveling to Mar-a-Lago to reaffirm his loyalty just weeks after the attack. McCarthy’s efforts to impede the House committee investigating the riot and his support for Trump’s impeachment expungement and investigations into alleged crimes showcased his commitment to Trump.

Intriguingly, McCarthy pursued an impeachment inquiry against President Biden, despite limited evidence of wrongdoing. Nevertheless, Trump’s nonintervention left McCarthy to face his fate without the lifeline he may have hoped for.

The Unconventional Nominee: Trump for Speaker?

The suggestion of Donald Trump as a nominee for Speaker is unconventional. It diverges from the historical norm that mandates an elected representative for the role. While the U.S. Constitution doesn’t explicitly mandate that the Speaker be a sitting member of the House, every previous Speaker in American history has held such a position.

For Trump to become House Speaker, he needs to secure 218 votes. This is challenging due to partisan divisions in Congress. It is highly unlikely that any Democrat would support his nomination.
