Walgreens settles lawsuit, offering compensation to denied job applicants.
Walgreens has agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement that could pay up to $918 to individuals who were denied employment due to background checks. The lawsuit, which claims Walgreens did not provide proper notice under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), affects those who applied for jobs between March 30, 2020, and May 17, 2022.
Walgreens, one of the largest Drugstore Chains in the U.S., will compensate applicants who were wrongfully denied employment based on background checks.
The settlement addresses claims that Walgreens sent email notifications of employment rejection that failed to comply with FCRA requirements.
While the Drugstore denies any wrongdoing, it has agreed to resolve the lawsuit by paying an undisclosed sum.
Under the settlement terms, eligible applicants will receive $100 automatically without needing to submit a claim form.
Those who intended to dispute their background check but refrained due to the email notification can receive an additional $818.28 by submitting a claim by May 23, 2024.
This brings the total possible compensation to $918.28.
To be eligible, individuals must have applied to Walgreens between March 30, 2020, and May 17, 2022, and were denied employment based on a background report.
Additionally, the final approval hearing for the settlement is set for July 23, 2024. Affected applicants can file claims through the designated settlement website.
The settlement coincides with the Drugstores’ announcement of downsizing operations, including closing 150 U.S. locations and 300 in the U.K. by August 31, 2024, following a period of lower earnings.
Despite these challenges, Walgreens continues to operate nearly 9,000 stores nationwide.
Applicants who prefer to pursue separate legal action against the Drugstore or object to the settlement terms must exclude themselves or file objections by May 23, 2024.
Failure to do so will bar them from future lawsuits regarding the same claims. However, it will entitle them to the settlement payments if approved.
To receive the additional compensation, eligible applicants must submit their claims by the specified deadline. Moreover, the process is straightforward, with the settlement administrator providing guidance through the official website and support via email and phone.
In conclusion, this settlement highlights the importance of adhering to FCRA regulations and provides relief to those affected by improper background check practices. Walgreens’ agreement to settle demonstrates its commitment to resolving the issue and moving forward. If you are an eligible applicant, ensure you file your claim promptly to receive your due compensation.
